* Finding answers in the print
* Inferring - Using the clues in the print when the answer to a question is not 'right there'.
WRITING:
* Using 'a' and 'an'. Ask your child to explain the error in the video When to use 'a' and 'an' under Useful Websites
* Writing in paragraphs (linked to main idea)
WRITING:
* Brainstorming
* Being creative and entertaining
* explore techniques authors use to make pictures in the readers' head
READING:
We are learning to:
* Use the right terms when we talk about reading (e.g. correct use of words such as letter, sounds, sentence, print, image, title, author, illustrator, punctuation names, paragraphs)
* Try a few things if we don't know a word and to explain to others things we can try.
1. Join the sounds (and at least first three sounds - when you get to the vowel sound try the short sound and if that doesn't help then try the long sound.
2. Use the picture and predict
3. Read around, say something when you get to the word you don't know and predict what would make sense.
4. Take off endings like ing, ed, ly...work out the word and then add the ending back on.
5. Predict what makes sense and keep reading
* Find evidence that helps us to answer questions in both the images and the print
One of our mantras in Reading this year will be: Find the words that tell you that!
Readers (even capable ones) sometimes predict what answer would make sense rather than searching through the text. This is typical of this age group but a skill we need to develop this year.
Finding the evidence in the text is an important habit to develop. If talking about a book at home, please ask your child to share the clues (words/images) that helped them to respond to your questions.
Later we will learn that sometimes the clues are in more than one place.
* Some groups have started to learn how to discuss texts with a group
e.g. "I'm looking at this image and I predict this page will be about..."
"A question I have now is......."
" The clues I used to answer your question are in the print/image here..."
"It doesn't actually tell you but I think this is a clue..."
" This page was mainly about...."
"I predict..."
